AI bots will kill us all! Or at least may seriously inconvenience humans

Pascal Kaufmann, founder of Starmind, which makes an AI-flavored corporate question answering system, in an email to The Register voiced skepticism about conflating human intelligence and AI-oriented computation. "Such claims just foster this misconception and actually hamper progress in AI," he said.

Before “Marcel,” There Was Pangaea: Inside JWT’s Two-Year Head Start On Publicis Groupe

Carla Serrano, the chief strategy officer for Publicis Groupe, looks right at the camera and declares that “Marcel”—the internal communications platform that the group will spend the next year developing—will be “the first ever professional assistant that uses AI and machine-learning technology.” So begins the “video heard ‘round the ad world,” during which Publicis chairman and CEO Arthur Sadoun sent shockwaves through the industry with the announcement that his team would forego any award shows or industry events for 2018 in an effort to funnel all of their creative and financial resources into this new system. For most viewers, it was this—Sadoun’s claim of event abstinence—that raised their eyebrows. But for Mark Sylvester, community strategist for J. Walter Thompson, it was the “first ever” assertion that rang loudest in his ears.

The AI Hype

2016 saw a record number of AI companies be born and 2017 shows no signs of slowing down. Recently Alphabet, the parent company of Google, announced it will be repositioning itself as “an AI company,” and Apple Inc. just unveiled plans for its Neural Engine chip for iPhone AI. It could be said, that we have moved from the Digital Age into the Age of AI. Perhaps there is still one gleaming error involved in this conclusion here– Do we actually knows what AI is?

The big puzzle

Everyone talks about artificial intelligence – and yet, it doesn’t even exist, according to Pascal Kaufmann. He doesn’t mean to provoke or to put a halt to the general euphoria: the neuroscientist only wants to steer research into the right direction. In his opinion the top priority should be to crack the brain code. Only once we understand how the brain works can we create artificial intelligence that deserves its name.
