EUR 33.-Cheating classic diet schemes: Is there a maximum of caloric / energy uptake the human body can handle above which eating more has no effect?

Dear Starmind community

Together with my boyfriend I started a competition to regain the ideal weight according to the body-mass index calculation. We have 10% higher weights than we should. I read somewhere that a reduction of 3500kcal/day leads to a weight loss of 1 pound roughly.

Hence, if a human needed 2100kcal/day to keep his weight, then eating only 1400kcal/day (-700 loss/day) should lead to a weight reduction of 1 pound within 5days. Accordingly, only eating 700kcal/day lead to a loss of 1kg within 5days and so on.

Now the question: Eating so little food is kind of tough, yet if I knew that after 5days I could eat 10000kcal (all the sweet stuff and food I had to refrain from) I would be more motivated to get through the tough days. Could it be that there is a maximum of caloric uptake the human body can handle/day? Assume I ate chocolate corresponding to a caloric uptake of 10'000kcal, would that then mean that I gained ~3kg of weight? Probably not.

Hence is there a maximum of calories the human body can handle per day above which eating more has no effect? Your solution could contribute to winning the competition I have. Thanks a lot!

If you look up the diet of the caveman, you will be fit, ready to hunt and gather with a six pack.

    Dear Mon
Thanks a lot for your kind words. Also, you indeed provide very useful inputs, some of them I shall certainly follow. Thanks a lot!
The question I posted a few weeks ago already, I am still very interested, probably more out of curiosity, whether there is such a maximum uptake:
10'000 kcal of food on one day - I would be very curious to learn what the consequences were regarding the gain of weight.

    With kind regards
    Laura

    Hi Laura,
Very interesting and tricky question of yours. Calorie uptake depends upon your age, sex, height, weight, lean body mass(LBM), and activity level.
I think taking too little food for some days with an urge to have too much at the end will not serve your purpose. Take a holistic approach toward your goal of weight loss. If you want to loose weight just to win a competition then you will be in hurry and probably do things that will not give a good result in long run. My tips are-
    1) Set the goal for some strong intention. ex- you want to loose weight because it will give you more fit and healthy body and mind, that means more efficiently you can do all your works, save more money which otherwise will go to solve health hazard.
    2) Every food is blessed and gift of god and if your out look towards food changes it will help to slow down your carving for unwanted foods.
    3) Don't jump into a strict diet that will frustrate you, other than that take small portion of those chocolaty creamy food and then do the required exercise next day.
    4) All our needs are just a mind game so train your mind to say stop whenever you have the urge for such foods. Mind needs good reasoning. Feed your mind with all the good reason to support your cause of weight loss.
Last but not the least consult your dietitian for proper balanced diet.
I think with this approaches you don't have to worry about calories.
    Wish you all the best.
    God bless.
    Mon

Laura you should consider eating celeri, (the sticks) transports water and has lots of cellulose. eat it raw, in soups like minestrone,...............
Wheat , industrial sugar and hidden sugar tend to blow up, pep´s weight.
Eating too much of these causes also "hunger attaks" thru the up and down of the blood sugar level. Also eating at relative fix times is a issue.

I can't answer your question but if you'd like to lose weight you should consider something called basal metabolic rate. Have you ever heard of "Yo-yo dieting" or "weight cycling"? While you're on diet you lose weight but afterwards you gain a lot more weight. The reason for that is that people often calculate to eat less calories but don't change their behaviour. If you eat less than what you usually eat your body learns to compensate by decreasing your basal metabolic rate. This means your body works more economically in order to store more calories for harder times. As long as you stick to your diet everything's fine. However, if you end the diet your body is still in 'economic mode' - you now eat more calories while your basal metabolic rate is still decreased. you eat more, your body stores more, you gain even more weight than you've had before! Therefore I suggest you not mainly to eat less but to practise more sports since sports increases your basal metabolic rate. Try to eat healthy, favour a fruit as a snack over some chocolate and drink much water (not any sweet drinks). So you don't have to calculate calories and starve yourself and you will still lose weight.
