    Thank you very much to your comments. I agree with Hecke, it depends on the locality. I would like to venture on this question so to really see if there is now what we call a "convergence" of global ethics in which we can say "we are the world". I will still welcome comments from different parts of the world.

    I agree with hecke, that the question is so generally asked that an answer would be difficult. An easy example:
    If cost for a lifelong prisoner would exceed the cost of a prisoner who gets killed, then you can imagine that it would be immoral not to kill the prisoner, or that it would be immoral not to have capital punishment as the money you would invest into the bad guy would be missing in eg the health sector or in a public hospital where children would die. Hence it depends on the context I think.

    can you specify justifiable and present situation?
    The former one depends largely on the value system you live in, the latter is depending on locality.

    From a european point of view, this question is easily answered, but already in the US you will get differing answers on that issue.
