"In a recent article in NY times: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/11/science/11GENO.html?ex=1212120000&en=62e31f358a5d279d&ei=5070"" I found the following statement:
""One day, people may view sex as essentially recreational, and conception as something best done in the laboratory,"" Dr. Gregory Stock wrote recently in ""Redesigning Humans. "" Parents may start to believe it is ""reckless and primitive to conceive a child without prior genetic testing.""
this contrasts with the following statement, derived from the same article: ""we risk turning the human population into one giant clone, tedious to meet with and bereft of the variation needed to respond to changing environments. The pursuit of perfection, if carried to extremes, is a sure recipe for extinction.""

Yet, from an individual's viewpoint, why should the individuum care what happens to the entire population in the very long run? It may be the same as driving with cars: Cars destroy our environment in the very long run, yet may impact is so minute that I do not fear killing my children by driving the car. Hence my question: Why should an individual not improve the genome of his offspring?
I seek for clear-cut evidence against eugenetics. The reward is issued to the most interesting and promising arguments referring to the article cited. (see PDF in the attachment)

"Wanted is an error in the following argumentation against the free will: Please find a logical error or an assumption or anything how you could defend the free will without referring to something divine nor irrational not graspable to human beings. What is wrong in the following statement:
*Manifest against the free will: *

We define ""free"" as something that is not determined by another cause. As am example, a stone lifted up and then released is not considered ""free"" as it is bound to gravity. Or: A human sensation such as hunger is not considered to be caused by free will as human physiology triggers that sensation depending on the nutrition level of the body and other factors. Thence the following is true: The impression or sensation of ""free will"" is generated by the neural substrate in the human brain. As any neural repsonse or firing or activity pattern, neural responses depend on genetic factors, circuitry and electrical signal processing and on external and internal stimuli -however, neurons do not fire at a free will or at their own discretion. Any sensation is caused by an external/ internal event OR may be randomly generated (however this may work). In both cases, there is no free or intended will as it is completely determined by the underlying neural substrate, which is again completely determined by physical forces and the actio=reaction paradigm.
Any argument in disfavor of above mentioned argumentation? "

"I am an atheist. Yet only recently I was struk by a very clever explanation on the existence of God: It went as follows:
We have the sensation of feeling hungry or thirsty, thence we may argue that humans do only experience sensations of things that actually exist, otherwise this sensation would not make sense, or it would actually only frustrate the person. Moreover, such sensations are triggered by dedicated structured in the human brain (eg hunger, thirst, anger etc). It is interesting enought that most humans long for eternal live, long for paradise and a fair instance such as God. The fact that something like the ""hunger for God exists"" as does the ""hunger for food"" exist, may be equated to the fact that food exists. Hence there must be a God.
Question: How could this argument be challenged? "

Artificial neural networks (ANN) become more and more sophisticated. Among them, spiking ANN to me seem very interesting.
An interesting algorithm is the so called "Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity", nicely detailed in
Synaptic plasticity: taming the beast. by: LF Abbott, SB Nelson Nat Neurosci, Vol. 3 Suppl (November 2000), pp. 1178-1183., see attachment.

To me the concept of STDP is somewhat cloudy, meaning, I do not understand how STDP may render an ANN sensitive for timely orchestrated events.
Of course, there are papers about that topic, yet to me an easy to understand simple explanation is still lacking. Any help here is highly appreciated:

How can overall an ANN become sensitive to timely orchestrated events just by executing the STDP rule?

I have learnt that the human visual nerve contains roughly 1 Mio nerve fibers. GIven an maximum spike frequency of eg 100 HZ (the average is rather below 30 HZ) one eye could hence convey 30 x 1 Mio = ~30Mbit /sec information, or about 4 Mbyte (or 12Mbyte) assuming that one spike is viewed as a 0 or 1.

In any case, to me that looks a rather low number and hence a pretty low information content.

There are theories, that the shape of spikes may contain information as well, however, to me action potentials seem like all or nothing answers. Also, time coding may convey information, however, this concept I do not really understand.

Often, people think that all the information sensed by our sensors eg in the hand, eyes, nose etc need to be somehow integrated within eg the human brain. Through numerous nerve fibers the sensed signals/stimuli ultimately lead to the brain where something is "integrated" , "analyzed" etc.

To depict that poblem, a homunculus (small smart human) could be assumed sitting in our brain receiving all that information (see attachment). The homunculus then receives eg input such as "green!", "tall", "has leaves", "contains a wooden basis", "smells like a tree" so that the homunculus decides then -> "that is a tree!". The human then recognizes that the various stimuli sensed by the environment were integrated so as to build up the sensation of a "tree".

Of course, that assumption has no scientific basis and it just shifts the problem down one level - how does the homunculus cope with that problem?

Only recently a professor mentioned to me, that maybe the brain does not need to integrate the information. How then still, can the brain integrate all those various sensory inputs so as to come up with the sensation of a tree? The so called "binding problem" seems to be related:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binding_problem

(I do not so much belibe in synchronizity as this explanation also just shifts the problem)

The question remains to me : do you have any creative and maybe novel concept on how I can avoid a homuncukus sitting in a brain and integratinig the incoming information?

I reward any smart and useful concept! Thanks a lot!

Dear Starminds

I have invested quite some consideration in the following statement: "Neural Networks (eg. made up by Brain Cells) are just a higher level of genetic regulatory networks".

I mean with that, that I see parallels when looking at genetic networks and comparing them to neural cells. While chemical compounds or product of genes may interact with each other over certain distances, they may trigger other genes to be expressed, either inhibiting each other, amplifying one another or causing again other genes to be silenced or triggered.

Ultimately, there emerge highly efficient networks, that may probably be cristallized or "fixated" or stored by means of neurons with dendrites and axons to connect to other neurons. Like this and by virtue of the neurites (= the branches either going to or emerging from a neuron) the initially genetic regulatory networks are turned into pathways for signals and grounding on the neural cell body there the magic occurs (neurons are silenced, amplified, signales are conveyed as in transistors and the like etc).
Instead of having morphogenes and gene-products spreading along a cell, action potentials (spikes) are routed along high-ways (neural branches, neurites), hence being faster and more precise that gene-product spreading.

What do you think of such an analogy or theory? I am referring here to a few Millions of years development, ie, with more primitive creatures relying on genetic networks only while higher or more recent animals feature neurons.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts here.

Kind regards

I am currently writing a paper about consciousness.

I personally think that it may be possible to reduce eg a human down to a reflex-engine based on which almost the entire behavior could be explained (eg - when I hear words, my brain takes them up, routes the acoustic information into a neural network and determines the outcome etc..).

However, what I find intriguing - "to whom am I listening when I am thinking? or put differently: When i close the eyes and engage in intense thinking/reasoning I clearly feel a kind of "self/me", which provides the reference for my thinking. Eg. "If I do this and this, then the other person did this and this".

The question: While I clearly find an external cause when someone speaks to me, I do not see/find that cause when I am reasoning. To WHOM am I reasoning? And if the answer is "to me myself" - what then is the myself? I kind of can hear my voice when reasoning, yet who steered to utter that voice?

I can build a reflex machine since I can copy the output-input mapping. Yet, what I do not understand is the "me"-feeling, the phenomenon of consciousness. I am completely struck by the phenomenon since I do not see any scientific approach on how to tackle that phenomenon. Maybe you have an idea on how to get hands on that issue somehow?

Any useful hint will be rewarded, thanks a lot!

I am interested in the limitations imposed on our thoughts by the language in which they are phrased. It is possible that we can learn from people who speak more than one language fluently, and with such proficiency that they genuinely think in two languages (as opposed to always translating into their preferred language). Many linguists today (Noam Chomsky in particular) believe in a Universal Grammar- an underlying set of similarities that are shared by every natural language because they are a fundamental part of human nature. It is therefore possible that the same set of restrictions apply to each natural language, in which case this approach may not be fruitful.

I myself speak only English, but I am sure there are plenty of Starminds that have mastery over more than one language. I would like to know to what extent thinking habits are limited by any particular language, so that it is necessary to switch to the other to express certain ideas. I am particularly interested in restrictions imposed by the English language, but any ideas on the subject will be welcome.

Ideally, the forums were topic specific, ie, "forum of computer problems", "forum of biology gurus" etc so that specific Starmind questions could directly be posted in there or at least the users of that forum be pointed towards Starmind. The goal is to attract smart question solvers having a specific skill set/expertise.

In order to make this question more rewarding and interesting, please post your contributions directly into the publicly accessible "question comments section".

CAVEAT 1: Please do not point us to forums/blogs/sites attached to certain journals or scientific publications (such as eg Nature, Science etc) as we know most of them or have already established contacts. Thanks a lot.

Mathematics- Discovered or Invented?

I am interested in the ontological status of mathematical entities and statements, and the place for mathematics in a reductive, materialistic universe.

The mathematician Kronecker is supposed to have said 'God gave us the integers, all else is the work of man.' Translated into a secular form, this statement is the claim that the integers are somehow part of the 'ultimate furniture' of the universe. However, when we see two chairs, we will find on closer inspection that they are in fact not the same. I think that however natural it may seem to do so, and however ubiquitously it is done amongst many animal species, grouping objects with 'family resemblances' into categories for counting is something that requires some form of consciousness as a prerequisite. This argument may fail in the case that matter is composed of indistinguishable particles, but then again this is a claim that requires empirical science to justify.

Along another line of reasoning, it seems likely that an alien species that was entirely different to us might develop a system of pure mathematics that looked very different from our own. To some extent we proceed by making definitions that are interesting to study; constructing those objects that seem natural and that best fit with our intuitions. However, it also seems true that every statement of mathematics (taken to include a base set of axioms upon which it is predicated, rules of inference and so on) that is capable of consistent formulation is either true of false, and which one of these two is the case is in some sense necessary (so the the alien system would agree with ours where it intersects).

I would be interested to hear any informed opinions of the subject.

In order to function effectively in a chaotic world, it is necessary to impose order upon it. We create structures and concepts that help us to understand the world around us, but that ultimately have no place in a reductive physical account of the universe. I am interested in the ways in which these edifices, these tacitly accepted structures, can lead to errors in our thinking.

To take a (perhaps somewhat cheap) example- ‘heat’ is a well-defined and quantifiable quantity, equipped with a scale from zero upwards. The term ‘cold’ is used merely to suggest the absence or scarcity of heat. However, in the popular understanding, ‘heat’ and ‘cold’ are thought of as dynamic and opposing forces, each of equal importance, that are termed balanced when an object falls within a (contextually defined) optimum window of temperature. It is for this reason that many people find it hard to understand why a refrigerator contains enough heat to boil the water to make a cup of tea. However, through human spectacles the popular understanding of light and lightness does not take on the same structural opposition with respect to darkness, or at least not to the same extent. Perhaps this is because we have experienced states that seem close to pitch-black absence of light, but absolute zero is not something we can intuitively relate too. As another example, I also think people can be mislead by an anthropomorphic interpretation of animal's demeanors (as based on appearance and behaviour) too seriously, especially when such animals are not capable of human emotion.

I'd be interested to hear any opinions or observations on the subject, and in particular examples of fallacies stemming from such patterns of though.

According to your knowledge/expertise/impression, which scientific foundations are lacking in order to build a terminator/iRobot like humanoid?

The energy consumption to me seems an obvious problem, yet theoretically, a nuclear power cell might do the job. Also, robot hands seem available and I have seen humanoid robots able to walk too. What do you think is still missing?
