Is cognition/intelligence in quadriplegic / paralyzed humans affected?

I have recently that the body and the brain interact in a close manner. I ask myself if then the lacking of the body in quadriplegic / paralyzed humans would have an impact on cognition or intelligence of humans who have suffered an accident affecting their body only.

I am looking for papers or reports dealing with this question. Thanks a lot!

Today at the AI Lab an interesting discussion took place I attended in the background:

One researcher was arguing, that being conscious was actually not a necessary condition to intelligently act and behave in the real world. One could build an artficial human perfectly capable of all the he features and facets a normal human is cabable of, however, a program would control the human deciding in each situation what to do. A smart learning algorithm would learn and decide, the only difference would be, that this hypothetical human would not be conscious. A question then arouse:

Question: What is the benefit of consciousness at all, if consciousness could be avoided and does not seem necessary for behaving in the world? Think of single cell organisms or animals without consciousness.

Thanks for short solutions and interesting thoughts on the problem. I am very curious to learn your opinion.

I know and read many things about interesting robot projects in Japan, the US, Switzerland or the EU - what, in your opinion, is currently the most ambitious/advanced humanoid robot project pursued?

Also planned projects count, yet they should be started in at least 5 years from now.

Thanks for your inputs from around the globe.

Can one improve one’s score on IQ-tests by practising, or is most of intelligence genetically determined? Can one improve one’s ability to memorize things, for example random numbers? How does the capacity for learning change when the person gets older? I’m looking for reliable surveys about this subject that show to what extent one can improve one’s ‘intelligence’ through practice, and how this depends on the age of the person.
